In my humble opinion, there's nothing better than a little winter fun in the form of ice sculptures, pub crawls and human dog sled races, especially when it's all kicked off with a frozen buns run. That is the reason why I will be in The Loop this Saturday, January 17 for the 2009 Ice Carnival - with bells on.

Most St. Louisans are already fond of "One of the 10 Great Streets in America," which is why the second annual Ice Carnival should be so much fun. It all starts at 10 a.m. with a 5K and10K Frozen Buns Run. From then on, it's a hodge-podge of almost any winter-related activity that you could think of: a temporary tattoo scavenger hunt, a human dog sled race, a s'mores roast, ice slides, an ice-breaker strength contest, a trolley car display with Frosty the Snowman, a month-long mustache contest, ice carving demonstrations, extreme winter sports movies and fire performers. So whether you bring the kiddos or make it a date day, the live bands, fire barrels, live artists, jugglers and a drum line will add to the carnival's entertainment value. As (another) added bonus, many of the unique stores in the loop will have price specials, and they'll be handing out 1,000 ice cubes with dollar coins in them throughout the day.

For the 'big kids,' there's even a Putt Putt Pub Crawl that starts at noon. Hole #1 is located at Cicero's, and golf attire is optional.

Check back next week for ToastedRav's video coverage of the chilly event.
