The following is intended as a support group for those still Father's Day shopping:
Standing in the middle of a book store, two men in their thirties stand somewhat aimlessly. Upon making eye contact one nods, the other smiles and says, "Father's Day?"
A nod, a chuckle, and they move on, no closer to pay dirt than they were a moment earlier.
This is not the opening to a novel or a scene from a play. This was my lunch break, as I took yet another shot at finding a gift for the man who has everything. We all say that about someone, but I think my dad fits the mold. He's one of those people who sees something he wants and immediately buys it, leaving no room for the well intentioned gift giver around a holiday. (My father-in-law is the same way, often infuriating my wife and her mom.)
I've tried the online thing with mixed success in the past. If you haven't been there before, Surprise.com is a really good "fire starter" for ideas and even purchases. The Brookstones and Radio Shacks of the world also provide fodder for my dad. But, as often as not, I find myself befuddled days before a "big day."
Let's help each other out! What did you get your dad for Father's Day?(This year or last year) Where did you shop? Where did you get your idea? Please comment and maybe we can all help each other out!
Maybe I'll give my Dad a copy of a bank statement that wasn't zero'd out. That ought to bring back some memories as well. Maybe a new bumper for a 1984 Trans Am (even though he no longer has the car), or a new Bee-Gees 8 Track that hasn't suffered a pre-teen's curiosity about how much tape they fit in one of those things. The absolute best would be a picture of his face the time I cam home from school telling him that my girlfriend might be pregnant, but we didn't have youtube back then.
