The guy turned himself around. You can always play the "someone is more deserving game" but that will just lead to bitterness and cynicism.

That being said, I am not an ex-con and I'd like to go...

Of all the cities I've spent extended time in, St. Louis, by far, has the worst drivers, most fast food restaurants, and definitely, definitely, definitely the most smokers. Those probably can leave a pretty bad mark for St. Louis!]]>

Wow, that totally disgusts me. Okay, I take it back. The fact that they're asking is downright greedy, but understandable. What disgusts me is that the decision will not come from the tax payers, but rather the "special committee." If the public schools asked for that kind of money, it would go to the tax payers vote, not some "special committee" who would eagerly push it through. The priorities in this country are unbelievable. American automakers want me to buy their cars (never again, after my Ford EXPLODED while I was driving it... perfectly maintained and 5 years old) when their cars are not worth buying and now professional sports who drop millions on people are uping ticket prices and asking for tax credits. I... don't get it.]]>

<![CDATA[annielou posted a comment on the article Does Ribbon Dancing Qualify as a 'Sport?']]> annielou posted a comment on the article Does Ribbon Dancing Qualify as a 'Sport?':

As an athlete recruited by at least one division one college (for softball), I have to admit that in my opinion, dance and cheerleading (as long as it involves serious tumbling and building) are sports and meet your requirements. I've competed at elite levels in softball and there is no WAY I could do what dancers and cheerleaders have trained and worked just as hard to do as I have in softball, basketball, soccer and lacrosse.

My boyfriend, however, would argue that it's not a sport unless there is a clear winner or loser. That means anything that is decided by a panel of judges (gymnastics, cheerleading, ribbon dancing, figure skating, etc) can only be considered for the term "athletic competition." His one and only exception to the rule is boxing, as it can be decided by a TKO. I see his logic, but I still think cheerleaders who tumble and build and dancers are most definitely athletes and compete in a sport.

Chess, though? Really? It's a competition, that's for sure, but there is no ounce of athleticism necessary to be a chess master.
