<![CDATA[The myths of Thanksgiving and the truth!]]> 5040 Thu, 20 Nov 2008 13:58:45 -0700 TOP MYTHS ABOUT THANKSGIVING

MYTH # 1 - The Pilgrims Held the First Thanksgiving

To see what the first Thanksgiving was like you have to go to: Texas. Texans claim the first Thanksgiving in America actually took place in little San Elizario, a community near El Paso, in 1598 -- twenty-three years before the Pilgrims' festival.

MYTH # 2 - Thanksgiving Was About Family

If by Thanksgiving, you have in mind the Pilgrim festival, forget about it being a family holiday. Put away your Norman Rockwell paintings. Turn off Bing Crosby. Thanksgiving was a multicultural community event. If it had been about family, the Pilgrims never would have invited the Indians to join them.

MYTH # 3 - The Pilgrims Ate Turkey

What did the Pilgrims eat at their Thanksgiving festival? They didn't have corn on the cob, apples, pears, potatoes or even cranberries. No one knows if they had turkey, although they were used to eating turkey. The only food we know they had for sure was deer. 11(And they didn't eat with a fork; they didn't have forks back then.)

MYTH #4 - Pilgrims Lived in Log Cabins

No Pilgrim ever lived in a log cabin. The log cabin did not appear in America until late in the seventeenth century, when it was introduced by Germans and Swedes. The very term "log cabin" cannot be found in print until the 1770s. Log cabins were virtually unknown in England at the time the Pilgrims arrived in America. So what kind of dwellings did the Pilgrims inhabit? As you can see if you visit Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts, the Pilgrims lived in wood clapboard houses made from sawed lumber.

MYTH # 5 - Pilgrims Dressed in Black

Not only did they not dress in black, they did not wear those funny buckles, weird shoes, or black steeple hats. So how did we get the idea of the buckles? Plimoth Plantation historian James W. Baker explains that in the nineteenth century, when the popular image of the Pilgrims was formed, buckles served as a kind of emblem of quaintness. That's the reason illustrators gave Santa buckles. Even the blunderbuss, with which Pilgrims are identified, was a symbol of quaintness. The blunderbuss was mainly used to control crowds. It wasn't a hunting rifle. But it looks out of date and fits the Pilgrim stereotype.

<![CDATA[Nashville bound...what are the best things to do there?]]> 4833 Thu, 06 Nov 2008 14:16:52 -0700 I've been a Country Music DJ for 23 years and living this close to Nashville you'd maybe think I go there every other weekend. I have only spent one night in the early 90's there and another time was back in 2002 when we were on our way to Florida...that's it. Daisy and I went to the Grand Ole Opry in 02 but we were moving across the country so we had a few things on our minds.

This time we are going to the Country Music Awards but we'll be there from Tuesday through Thursday and are looking for those little out of the way gems of Nashville. If you have been there please post your ideas here or you can email me directly. Any help would be great!

<![CDATA[Gov. Palin pranked...the audio is here.]]> 4769 Mon, 03 Nov 2008 14:06:46 -0700 Sarah Palin unwittingly took a prank call from a Canadian comedian posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and telling her she would make a good president someday. Ironically, by talking to a fake French president, Palin's foreign relation skills are now better than Barack Obama's.

Wow I cannot believe this actually happened to Gov. Palin I guess the security surrounding the Vice Presidential canidate has something to be desired.

<![CDATA[FIVE FINANCIAL HABITS TO MAKE YOU HAPPIER]]> 4741 Fri, 31 Oct 2008 14:30:04 -0600 Living below your means, not just within is where it's at....

Although it's difficult for most of us to increase our income significantly (especially in this economy), we do have control over our money-handling habits. Here are some of the good habits to adopt:

1) Balance your checkbook. It may seem like quaint advice, but it's not. People who balance their checkbooks monthly are happier -- perhaps because they don't worry that the next check they write will bounce. Or maybe seeing that figure on the bottom line curbs the impulse to spend.

2) Save 5% of what you make. Financial planners often say it's important to save at least 10% of earnings. In reality, you just need to cross the 5% threshold to see a significant boost in happiness. Once you've shown yourself you can save 5%, you'll find it easier to save more.

3) Make a will. Americans have made progress in writing wills. The last big piece of research to measure how many people don't have wills put the number at 70%, according to Consumer Reports. That's still not enough, especially because having a will results in less financial worry in the long run.

4) Give to charity. Whether you write checks to your favorite cause, volunteer your time or give away your no-longer-useful belongings, the act of giving is good not just for your beneficiary, but also for you. Why? It makes you happier.

5) Talk to your spouse/partner about what you plan to charge. One of the hottest buttons you can push in a marriage is borrowing money without a spouse's knowledge. Many people don't realize it, but that's precisely what you're doing each time you charge on a credit card. So before you slide that Visa through the electronic slot, have an honest chat first.

<![CDATA[She is Amazing!]]> 4516 Sun, 19 Oct 2008 13:43:52 -0600 Yes, my first and only (for now) daughter Abby is amazing. But that's not the 'she' I am referring to when I say "She is amazing!"

If you didn't know, Bo Matthews' wife Daisy is a very talented artist. I was very impressed with the painting she did for the Race for the Cure this year and a recent portrait of Oprah Winfrey. (If you didn't hear the Oprah story, you must read here.)

Her most recent work: a portrait of our Abby.

Brian and I are happy to claim the exceptional features on our baby that make this portrait gorgeous. : ) But I think Daisy also captured the innocence and angelic quality we see in all children.

When Abby saw it for the first time she sat down in front of it and said: "It's Abby. She has paint all over herself. I love my paint."

Thank you Daisy - it's our heart with Kavanagh color! It will be treasured in our home for many, many years to come.

(If there is a break-in at my house, look to the grandparents first : )

To view more of Daisy's work visit her Web site here. Look at the beautiful baby sleeping on her side (the first photo in the portrait/charcoal section). It's Adeline Breadinski - Cornbread's new baby girl.

<![CDATA[Local soldier gave all...Protesters are coming!]]> 4347 Wed, 08 Oct 2008 19:59:55 -0600 My friend Butch over at the VFW in Troy told me that all bikes are welcome to honor this soldier and family for their sacrifice for our freedom.

He told me of an organized group of protestors that are coming in from a church in Kansas that screams offensive things to the mourners...displaying signs with horrific, vile, hurtful words. If that's how they want to use the "free speech" ammendment...so be it.

These people will try and get in view of the family that is grieving like no family should.

18 wheelers, combines, septic trucks, fire truck, buses...any large vehicle can be used to shield the family...Just like in Extreme Home Makeover...you'll be hearing "MOVE THAT BUS" right in front of those protestors.

TO BE INVOLVED: Show up Saturday morning by 8am and park behind the funeral home...look for leather vests...they'll help you the rest of the way. The hard details of locations and times are below in a posting I found on a blog. The protestors have permits and legally can be there...we're just trying to protect the family.

Any questions call Butch at 618-520-5212.
