You know how when you see someone for the first time in years you call your friends and dish about every detail about your run-in? I am in that situation now. Friends, I saw them on Tuesday night in Sex and the City: The Movie, and - oh my - there is so much I want to tell you. But, alas, writing this review has given me the arduous task of talking about my encounter without divulging the juicy details.
Like my kindred "Sex Addict" souls out there, I have been devouring articles and interviews about the movie. I have been peeking through my fingers while reading or watching (which makes reading especially hard) with hope and dread that I would uncover a spoiler or two... or at least something to get my fix until the release. Try as I might to tie together plot pieces from rumors and media, I walked out of the movie knowing I could never work for the CIA, because in spite of all that research I hadn't figured out even a tiny piece of the plot. I also walked out of the movie surprised, smiling, and with that lump in your throat that closure sometimes gives you.
I love Sex and the City, the movie and the series, because watching not only helps me get in touch with that glammy/fashionista alter ego that lurks inside of me, but the candor, growth, and flaws of the characters make them easy to relate to - they feel like friends. And Carrie's Vivienne Westwood wedding gown? Amazing! Yes, there is a wedding scene, and there is a flood of beautifully designed wedding dresses in the movie, and that statement does not constitute a spoiler because all you have to do is pick up the latest issue of Vogue to know that nugget. And the shoes - oh my, the shoes - they make me long for a second mortgage and a closet large enough to give warmth and shelter to every last one of them. The movie picks up five years after the series ended and having that time pass in their lives was a touch of brilliance for two reasons:
1) No one wants to see five year old Manolos on our fashionista friends' feet,
and
2) Who really is excited about running into the ex-cheerleader who still thinks she is captain of the squad five years after high school is over? No one - you call your friends and talk about how sad it was talking to her.
I picked right back up with the gals, it had the air of a reunion - things have happened in their lives and things have happened in my life since they left the air, but like all old friends, you feel like you haven't missed a step.
While my life here in St. Louie may not be filled with Manolos and Choos, the movie Sex-ified St. Louis just a wee bit in my eyes - thanks to our humble city's cameo. Jennifer Hudson joins Manhattan's pink ladies in the movie as Louise, Carrie's assistant who hails from our humble hometown.
Stretching the film to a new coast, the film opens with Samantha in LA. It makes you realize how much New York really is a integral part of the story, people often say it is "the fifth character," and putting Sam in LA proves that the Sex sensation belongs to New York. Which also left me wondering why the premiere in London - really? Y'all not only snubbed the city that made the Sex sensation - ya snubbed the whole country? I still can't get over that, and while I was watching a sneak peek at Tuesday's red carpet and interviews I really felt like this was the 3rd time the movie had premiered, I could hear it and see it all over the stars. I still don't get it and never will - no matter how many press releases I read about it.
I loved the film and give it five pairs of these out of five. For you friend, and since the film was everything I had hoped it would be, I wish that the film is everything you had hoped it to be. Which gets me to thinking: what do you hope the film will be like, fellow Sex Addicts and fans?
Luckily she is going with her sisters so I'm free! ...Although I don't mind looking at Charlotte.
