Are Jumbotron Proposals a Do or a Don't?

If you frequent sports venues across the country, I'm sure that you've seen something similar to "Beth, I Love You - Will You Marry Me? Bob" on a jumbotron. In fact, I've seen this more times than I can recall, and it's almost always followed by a collective "awwwww" from everyone all the ladies in attendance.

There are a couple schools of thought about asking for a lady's hand in marriage on a huge screen at your favorite sports venue. Some women think that it's overdone, corny and they'd rather be caught dead than be proposed to in this manner. Still, I know lots of couples who got engaged this way, and the bride-to-be thought it was romantic that her future groom was willing to express his love for her in front of so many people.

In case you're wanting to try this approach here in St. Louis, you'll have to do so during a Rams game (groan). The Cardinals claim that this definitely isn't an option, and although the Blues used to offer jumbotron proposals, they discontinued this service three years ago. (It might be because of the $500 required donation.) So if you're willing to shell out $100 bucks at a St. Louis football game, it counts as a tax-deductible donation and it's as easy as going here (Scoreboard Messages is towards the bottom of the page).

But before you try this incredibly public pledge of undying love, make sure you know she'll say yes. This wasn't on a jumbotron, but it was still on national TV in front of thousands of basketball fans. Click on the Video tab to see one of the worst rejections I've ever seen. Still, at least we haven't started using them to ask for a divorce yet.

What are your thoughts? Are public jumbotron proposals romantic or ridiculous?

I think they are tacky, but that's just one girl's opinion.

    Great video though!
  • I don't know if I feel worse for the guy or the girl...
  • Best jumbotron proposal prank ever

  • Wow. I honestly don't know how to respond to this, it's amazingly something but I'm not sure what...
  • This is awesome. She hit him hard!! The retaliation to this prank better have been amazing!
  • Honestly, that guy who pulled that prank has problems, that was terrible to do to the girl and the guy.
  • I do think that it was pretty cruel to the girl, who was just an innocent bystander, but if they were really in a prank war, I bet the guy deserved it. I bet he got his [Naughty language removed.] beat when he got back to the office though.
  • Not a fan of jumbotron proposals. I have been proposed to 3 times and have been grateful each time that it was just the two of us, no fanfare, no family, no crowds.

I Think that whatever makes that couple happy and allows them to enjoy life together is all that matters: if that is expressing their love through a jumbotron. I am not one to judge or criticize how someone else should express their love for someone. It is their life, and their love, let them express it anyway they please, and if that is through a Jumbotron, I'm right there supporting them, only hoping she says "Yes! " and they enjoy a wonderful, amazing, life together.
We need not to judge what we think is right for others to do, but learn to embrace what makes them happy and with that we can find happiness with in us. The only reason people don't want to see such an expression of love in such a public place is because we live in such a negative, selfish society, and when we are placed in a situation of complete happiness and postive energy we tend to reject it instead of taking it in, and learning how to take our inner happiness and use it as happiness for others. The world would be such a better place is we stopped trying to ban happiness and learned to accept it. People fall in love, it is an amazing part of living life and enjoying every moment were given, and we are no one to say if it is right or wrong how some decides to express it. We were not born to live up to anyone standards but our own, so I say if you love someone, do whatever makes you happy, and screw everyone else, if they don't want to witness happness thats their own issues, but love is a wonderful thing and should be valued and shared with everyone, not shuned away and looked down upon. LOVE LIFE, LIVE IT UP, LOVE URSELF, AND LOVE OTHERS, BE HAPPY, AND ENJOY EVERYTHING YOU HAVE IN LIFE AND TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANITE, not even a jumbotron, lol
Love life and it loves you back, hate live and it will hate you back...it;s all about our attitude, not about the jumbotron, some poeple are negative and don;t enjoy life, so then they don't enjoy seeing people happy on a jumbotron, or you can be postive, and enjoy life and realize when you see a jumbotron it symbolizes something so wonderful and appreciate it.
It is so hard to have a positive attitude in this negative society, but it will only lead you to success, such as marriage, as others will stay paralyzed in the negative moments unable to move on and enjoy life and others happiness.
    God Bless and Happy Holidays
  • Well If they are die hard fans then whatever floats their boat but I must say its an easy way out ....
  • I saw this pulled on a buddy of mine at the Penguin in Columbia. It didn't go over so hot. The "bride" was not too happy with us. But it cost us $20 not $500
