This morning the 44th President was sworn into office but not without controversy. We now have a Commander in Chief who has a firm anti-beet stance. We want to clarify that he is anti-beets as in the vegetable, not beats as in good music (iPod One is home to an eclectic mix, including Fugees and Jay-Z). While we know Dwight Schrute would have a problem with this, Jim Fiala, a St. Louis Chef and owner of Clayton restaurant The Crossing, also takes issue with the Presidents veggie bias.
Fiala is trying to bring back the beet and in honor of the President's inauguration he has declared today "Stand Up For Beets!" Day. In addition to this day dedicated to the controversial red root-vegetable he has also challenged our new President to try the beet salad at The Crossing the next time he rolls through St. Louis.
We ToastedRav's staffers weren't sure about our stance on all this hub-bub so we tried some of Fiala's beets this morning. The restaurant's beet salad with goat cheese and pine nuts has been a customer favorite for the last ten years so we all thought it would be worth a shot for our beet experience. You can watch our beet salad taste test on the Video tab to see where we landed on the issue.
What is your stance on beets? Are with with Schrute Farms or with the President? If you aren't sure (or just really love beets) you can stop by The Crossing this evening. Every diner will be treated to a complimentary beet salad with their dinner in honor of our new President and "Stand Up For Beets!" Day.
The Crossing is located at 7823 Forsyth Blvd in downtown Clayton. They are open for dinner this evening from 5pm until 9pm and will be giving away their famous beet salad to all dinner guests tonight only.
