Stepping into The Fountain on Locust the first thing you are struck by is the beautiful, hand-painted Art Deco walls. You could marvel at the paintings and antique lighting for hours, but eventually they are going to put a menu in front of you, then you will have a chance to marvel at that for a while. Unique dishes like their special recipe Polish Dill Pickle soup, grilled cheese with Fuji apples, and orange onion salad tempt you to order one of everything on the menu just to try a bite. Luckily you can keep going back, which makes choosing a little easier, because one stop at The Fountain and I dare you to not want to go back.

Everything at The Fountain is made in house with the exception of their ice cream and that attention to quality really shows in everything they serve. Their homemade soups are a signature on their menu, and as scary as it may sound the Dill Pickle soup tastes like dill pickle flavored potato chips - and is insanely delicious. They also serve the best grilled cheese in town, the Royal Grill, which is described as an "adult grilled cheese" (get your mind out of the gutter) layered with two different kinds of cheese and Fuji apples.

The restaurant has been open for just shy of one year and is fast becoming a city favorite. Their menu is filled with tasty and fun items, but the old fashioned cocktails and the ice cream martinis that fill the back page of the menu has people around St. Louis raving about the place. Also rave worthy is the desert menu, which is packed tasty old fashioned ice cream novelties, deserts, and sodas. Their ice cream is brought in from a Wisconsin dairy that ages that ice cream and uses very little butter fat, and all of their dessert toppings and desert cakes are made in house.

The Fountain on Locust is like taking a trip to the 1920's, and it's a trip that I plan to make as often as possible. The food and decor is stylish and classy without being stuffy - because, after all, it's kind of hard to be uppity when you are slurping down a hot fudge sundae. Another big plus The Fountain has going for them is their über cheap prices. It is rare to find such awesome food for so cheap, especially food made with such care and quality ingredients.
I highly recommend stopping and seeing what all of the buzz is about and staying for the heavenly ice cream martinis. The Fountain on Locust is located at 3037 Locust St and is open Tuesday through Saturday at 11:00am. During the week they close their doors when the crowds start to thin out, but on weekends they are serving up treats and signature cocktails until midnight. To compliment the restaurant's cool, retro menu and decor they also offer live burlesque performances at 8pm on the first Thursday of the month.
