Can You Pronounce These Common St. Louis Words Correctly?

Can You Pronounce These Street Names?

The story

Answer me this: if most broadcasters come from the Midwest because they don't have an accent, then why do we have such a hard time pronouncing St. Louis street names, and even our own state's name? This burning question may not have been answered when we headed to the St. Patrick's Day parade equi Check out the full story.

As a Narth County boy who says "Warshing Machine," I offer a hypocrisy alert before I write this, but...

Do you mean "correct" pronunciation as in St. Louis thinks it's the correct pronunciation? Or do you mean "correct" as in an educated person from anywhere else in the world thinks it's the correct pronunciation?

Gravois is NOT really pronounced "GRAV-VOYCE". Gratoit isn't pronounced the way it's presented either (Think Grah-TWAH).

On the west side of Columbia MO runs the Aux Vasse (Oh VAH) river. All the locals called it the "Ox Vassey."

Sigh. Whatterya gonna do? When in Hoosier Rome...
  • The news and traffic people always say it "grachiot" though... was I wrong too, hahahaha!
  • As a transplant, I can tell you that it took me quite a while to pronounce things as they do here in the Mighty MO. Examples- Spoede, Carondolet, Koch, Cuivre River. How do you say them? And what is truly "correct"?

Ha! Looking at your examples, Sandy, I realize that I only bristle at mispronunciations of the French words.

I complicitly mispronounce Koch "Coke" and Spoede "Spade-dee". I even pronounce the epenthis "t" at the end of "Caron-do-LETT," for some reason.

But I do shake my head when my fellow denizens of the 'Lou say "Quiver River," instead of "Quee-vra River"
