Answer me this: if most broadcasters come from the Midwest because they don't have an accent, then why do we have such a hard time pronouncing St. Louis street names, and even our own state's name? Do you mean "correct" pronunciation as in St. Louis thinks it's the correct pronunciation? Or do you mean "correct" as in an educated person from anywhere else in the world thinks it's the correct pronunciation?
Gravois is NOT really pronounced "GRAV-VOYCE". Gratoit isn't pronounced the way it's presented either (Think Grah-TWAH).
On the west side of Columbia MO runs the Aux Vasse (Oh VAH) river. All the locals called it the "Ox Vassey."
Sigh. Whatterya gonna do? When in Hoosier Rome...
I complicitly mispronounce Koch "Coke" and Spoede "Spade-dee". I even pronounce the epenthis "t" at the end of "Caron-do-LETT," for some reason.
But I do shake my head when my fellow denizens of the 'Lou say "Quiver River," instead of "Quee-vra River"
